Social Science Research Basics

What is social science? How do we study people and the culture, organizations, and politics that they make? In this section, we discuss how science is a process and a way of observing and thinking about the world.

Science has to do with the way in which questions are formulated and answered; it is a set of rules and forms for inquiry and observation created by people who want verifiable answers.

Social Science is the scientific method applied to human behavior.  Political Science and Public Administration are the scientific study of human behavior in politics and the public sector. This video will introduce you to social science research and the methods we use to answer research questions.


Watch the video and then ask yourself these questions:

  1. What are the differences among positivist, interpretive, and critical social science?
  2. What is quantitative research? Can you give examples?
  3. What is qualitative research? Can you give examples?

When she says "sociology," think "social science."

Sociology and Political Science have a lot in common, particularly in the way the two disciplines approach research methods and epistemology (i.e., how we know things).
